Karwa Chauth 2026: Date, Puja Muhurat, Moonrise Time and What the Stars Say

“Karwa Chauth is not a test of how long a woman can stay hungry. It is a conversation with the Moon, the planet of the mind, about the kind of home she wants to come back to every evening.”  — Richa Pathak

Karwa Chauth 2026: The Fast That Waits for the Moon

Every year, somewhere around the last week of October, I notice the same thing in my consultation room at Chandivali. The phone calls change. Women who have not spoken to me since last Karwa Chauth ring up with one question that sounds simple and never is: “Richa ji, Karwa Chauth kab hai, aur chaand kitne baje niklega?” They want the date, the puja muhurat and the moonrise time, because a missed minute on this day feels like a missed promise.

So let me answer it first, and then we will spend the rest of this article on what most calendars do not tell you. Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29th October 2026. The Chaturthi Tithi of Kartik Krishna Paksha begins at 1:06 AM and ends at 10:09 PM that day, the Karwa Chauth puja muhurat in the evening runs from 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM, and the Moon rises at 8:17 PM in Delhi. Mumbai moonrise comes later, close to nine at night.

Those are the numbers. What follows is the meaning behind them: why this particular Karwa Chauth carries a few unusual planetary signatures, how Mumbai families can observe the vrat without losing the rhythm of a working day, which Vastu corrections quietly strengthen the puja, and which remedies I actually recommend to the women who sit across from me.

Why Karwa Chauth 2026 Is Worth Paying Attention To

Not every Karwa Chauth is astrologically the same. The festival always falls on Krishna Chaturthi in Kartik, but the day of the week, the nakshatra the Moon is travelling through and the placement of Jupiter change the flavour of the vrat from year to year. This year three things stand out.

1. It falls on a Thursday, the day of Jupiter

In a woman’s kundli, Jupiter (Guru) is the natural significator of the husband and of the blessings that come through marriage. A Karwa Chauth that lands on Guruvar therefore carries a gentle, protective quality. If your Jupiter is weak or afflicted in the horoscope, a Thursday vrat gives you a rare chance to strengthen it through an act you are already doing. I will tell you how in the remedies section.

2. The same Chaturthi is Vakratunda Sankashti

This is the point that matters most to my Mumbai readers. The Chaturthi tithi that carries Karwa Chauth in North India is also Sankashti Chaturthi, the fast dedicated to Lord Ganesha, which Maharashtra observes with great devotion (according to the Amanta calendar followed here, the month is still Ashwin). In many Maharashtrian homes the Sankashti fast is broken only after moonrise, exactly like Karwa Chauth. So for the families of Mumbai, where North Indian and Maharashtrian households live floor above floor, 29th October brings two vows that meet at the same Moon.

Astrologically, Ganesha is the remover of obstacles, and Chaturthi is his tithi. A vrat that begins with his invocation and ends with the Moon’s arghya has a rare symmetry: first the obstacles are cleared, then the mind is calmed.

3. The Moon is in a strong, comfortable nakshatra

Panchang sources mark 29th October as Rohini Vrat as well, which tells us the Moon is moving through Rohini nakshatra in Taurus. Taurus is the sign where the Moon is exalted, and Rohini is, in classical texts, the Moon’s most beloved nakshatra. An exalted, well-seated Moon is exactly what you want when the whole ritual revolves around offering water to it. For couples, Taurus and Rohini speak of steadiness, comfort, faithfulness and a love that is expressed through care rather than drama. I would call this a Karwa Chauth for rebuilding trust and warmth at home.

What Is Karwa Chauth and Why Do Women Keep It?

The name is simple. Karwa is the small earthen pot with a spout that is filled with water and used to offer arghya to the Moon. Chauth means the fourth lunar day. The festival is also called Karak Chaturthi, and it is kept on the fourth day after Purnima in Kartik, most widely in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, and today in every city where those families have settled, Mumbai included.

Traditionally a married woman fasts from sunrise until moonrise to pray for her husband’s long life and good health. Behind that sentence sit older and quieter meanings. The vrat was a promise made by women whose husbands travelled to war or trade. It was also a bond between brides who had just arrived in an unfamiliar village and found, in the evening puja circle, their first friends. Even now, when I ask my clients what they love most about the day, the answer is rarely the fast. It is the thali being passed around, the songs, the gifts, the sense of belonging to a long line of women.

Many unmarried women also keep the fast, praying for a loving and loyal partner. It is a personal choice and nobody should be forced into it, which brings me to something I say to every client: the vrat is meant to nourish a relationship, never to punish the body.

Karwa Chauth 2026 Vrat Vidhi: Hour by Hour

Before sunrise: Sargi

The day opens with Sargi, the pre-dawn meal traditionally sent or prepared by the mother-in-law. Fruits, dry fruits, sweets, a little feni and something light and nourishing are the usual items. Because the fast that follows is long, eat slowly and choose food that releases energy gradually. Dates, nuts, coconut water, fruit and a bowl of vermicelli kheer work far better than heavy fried food. Finish before the fasting time begins, which in Delhi is 6:31 AM.

Through the day: the Sankalp and a quiet mind

After bathing, take the sankalp, a simple vow to keep the vrat with a sincere heart. Dress in red, maroon, orange or other auspicious colours. Apply mehendi if you like (most women do it the evening before), wear your bangles, sindoor and jewellery. Then try, as far as a Thursday allows, to keep your day gentle. Avoid arguments, gossip and strenuous work. A fast kept in irritation loses its fragrance.

Evening: the puja during the muhurat

The Karwa Chauth puja muhurat on 29th October 2026 is 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM as per Delhi timings, and families in Mumbai usually keep the same window or a few minutes later. Women gather with their thalis, worship Goddess Gauri (Parvati) along with Lord Shiva, Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha, listen to the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha and exchange the karwa seven times in the circle, singing the traditional songs. A senior woman of the family usually narrates the katha.

Night: Moon, sieve and the first sip

When the Moon rises, look at it through a sieve (channi), offer arghya of water from the karwa and pray. Then look at your husband through the same sieve. He offers you the first sip of water and a bite of something sweet, and the fast is broken. The family then shares a meal. If the sky is cloudy or buildings block the horizon, as they so often do in Mumbai, many families wait for the panchang moonrise time and offer arghya facing the eastern direction. Follow your own family custom or ask an elder or a pandit you trust.

Karwa Chauth puja samagri

  • Karwa (earthen pot) with a lid and water, and a second karwa for the daughter-in-law or sister if your family follows that custom
  • Channi (sieve), diya, incense and a matchbox
  • Roli, kumkum, rice (akshat), turmeric and sindoor
  • Fresh flowers, durva grass for Ganesha, and fruits
  • Sweets such as halwa, mathri or ladoo for the thali and for the baya
  • Image or idol of Gauri, Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya (or a small clay Gauri made at home)
  • Water in a separate lota for the arghya to the Moon

The Legends of Karwa Chauth, Read with an Astrologer’s Eye

Four stories are told most often on this day. I never narrate them only as stories. Each one hides a lesson about the Moon, about patience, or about the way a woman’s steadiness can change a destiny.

Queen Veeravati and the false moon

Veeravati, the only sister of seven brothers, kept her first Karwa Chauth at her parents’ home. Seeing her faint with hunger, her brothers held a lamp behind a sieve and told her the Moon had risen. She broke her fast, and news came that her husband had died. Her repentance and a year of faithful vrat brought him back. Astrologically this is a story about the Moon as the mind: when hunger and emotion cloud our judgement, we mistake a lamp for the Moon. The lesson is to wait for the real rising, in vrat and in life.

Karwa and the crocodile

Karwa’s husband was seized by a crocodile while bathing. She bound the creature with a cotton thread and demanded that Yama send it to hell and grant her husband a long life. When Yama hesitated, she threatened to curse him. I read this as a story about Saturn and Mars together, discipline and courage. A woman who keeps her word, her thread and her vow can stand even before the Lord of Death.

Savitri and Satyavan

Savitri followed Yama for miles until he granted her a boon, and she cleverly asked for children with Satyavan, which was impossible unless he lived. Though this katha is more closely tied to Vat Savitri, some traditions also remember it on Karwa Chauth. The teaching is wisdom: speak the right wish at the right moment.

Draupadi and the Pandavas

When Arjuna went to the mountains and the Pandavas faced trials, Draupadi turned to Krishna, who told her of the fast that Goddess Parvati once kept for Shiva. She observed it, and the family’s troubles eased. For me it speaks of a wife’s prayer as a family’s protective shield, a Jupiter-like quality of faith that holds a household together.

What Your Kundli Says About Your Karwa Chauth Vrat

Over twenty-five years and more than a lakh of consultations, I have noticed that women do not all experience this fast the same way, and the kundli explains why.

  • A strong Moon: you find the fast peaceful, even meditative. The evening puja feels like a homecoming.
  • A weak or afflicted Moon (with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn): you may feel anxious, irritable or emotionally drained through the afternoon. Keep your day light, sip nothing you are not allowed to, but rest, listen to calming bhajans and avoid arguments.
  • Venus under stress: the lover in you wants to feel seen. Such women often find that the husband’s small gesture at moonrise means more than any gift.
  • Jupiter weak, or the seventh house troubled: this is a year to do the Thursday remedy below with full faith. Marital delay, repeated misunderstandings or a distant spouse are classic indicators
  • Mangal Dosha: Karwa Chauth is an excellent day for the Gauri-Shiva and Ganesha prayers I describe below, which bring softness to a fiery Mars.

None of these is a verdict. A kundli shows tendencies, not sentences. If you would like to know how your own chart is placed for this Karwa Chauth, a personal reading is far more useful than any general forecast.

VASTU TIP: Where to Place Your Karwa Chauth Puja

Set up the puja in the North-East (Ishan) corner of your home, the zone of water and spiritual energy. Sit facing east or north while worshipping, and keep the karwa filled with fresh water in the north-east of the thali.

Light the diya on the south-east side of the puja space (Agni corner), and keep the puja area clean and clutter-free. Avoid performing the puja with your back to the north-east or in front of a bathroom wall.

For arghya to the Moon, stand at a window, balcony or terrace from where the eastern sky is visible. Clean the sill or balcony floor beforehand. A tidy place to meet the Moon invites a calmer mind.

A Vastu note for couples: the south-west (Nairitya) zone governs stability in marriage. If the master bedroom is in this zone, keep the bed headboard on the south or west wall and keep the space under the bed free of stored items. Even such small corrections help many of the couples who come to me after Karwa Chauth asking why the warmth fades once the festival ends.

Three Remedies I Recommend for Karwa Chauth 2026

REMEDY 1: For Marital Harmony (Gauri-Shiva Puja)

During the evening puja, offer a pair of red flowers and a little sindoor to Goddess Gauri and white flowers with a few bael leaves to Lord Shiva. Pray together as a couple for a minute if possible, holding hands. Chant “Om Gauri Shankaraya Namah” 21 times. Keep the sindoor from the puja and apply it the next morning.

REMEDY 2: To Strengthen Jupiter on this Thursday

Wear something yellow, offer chana dal, jaggery and a yellow flower to the Tulsi plant or to the Shiva-Parvati image, and light a ghee diya. Donate yellow fruit or sweets (bananas, besan ladoo) to a priest, a temple or someone in need. If your chart has weak Jupiter, repeat on the following Thursdays for a few weeks.

REMEDY 3: Sankashti Ganesha Prayer for Removing Obstacles

Before you break your fast, offer 21 blades of durva grass and a modak or ladoo to Lord Ganesha. Chant “Om Vakratundaya Hum” 11 times. After the Moon’s arghya, say a short prayer for the obstacles in your marriage, family or career to dissolve.

Remedies work best when they are done with sincerity and a calm mind. If any of the above feels unsuitable for your health or family tradition, do what you can comfortably and ask your elders or a priest for guidance.

Karwa Chauth 2026: Do’s and Don’ts

Do

  • Eat a nourishing Sargi and finish it before the fasting time begins
  • Wear auspicious colours such as red, maroon, orange, pink or green
  • Keep the puja space clean, and hold the puja within the muhurat window
  • Check your own city’s moonrise time a day earlier, especially in Mumbai where it comes later than Delhi
  • Break the fast gently: water first, then something sweet, then a light meal

Avoid

  • Sleeping through the afternoon and the puja time
  • Black or dark navy clothing for the puja
  • Arguments, harsh words and negative talk during the day
  • Cutting cloth, using needles or knives needlessly, as many families avoid this on the vrat
  • Breaking the fast before the Moon is offered arghya
  • Pushing through if you feel faint or unwell. Health comes first

A word on health: women who are pregnant, nursing, diabetic or unwell should not feel pressured to keep a nirjala fast. Many families allow water, fruit or milk in such cases, and the vrat is no less sincere for it. Please speak to your doctor and your family before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is Karwa Chauth on 28th or 29th October 2026?

In India, Karwa Chauth 2026 is on Thursday, 29th October. The Chaturthi tithi runs from 1:06 AM to 10:09 PM on that day. Some websites show 28th October because the tithi falls a day earlier in the United States and Canada. If you live in India, keep the vrat on the 29th.

Q. What is the Karwa Chauth 2026 puja muhurat?

As per Delhi timings, the puja muhurat is 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM on 29th October 2026. Muhurat timings shift by a few minutes from city to city, so check a local panchang for your suburb.

Q. What time is moonrise on Karwa Chauth 2026 in Mumbai?

The moon rises at 8:17 PM in Delhi. In Mumbai it rises later, around 8:50 to 9:00 PM according to different panchangs. Check the exact minute on the day before breaking your fast.

Q. Why is Karwa Chauth 2026 also called Sankashti?

Because the same Krishna Chaturthi carries Vakratunda Sankashti Chaturthi, the monthly Ganesha vrat, which is also broken after moonrise.

Q. Can unmarried women keep the Karwa Chauth fast?

Yes. Many unmarried women fast and pray for a loving, faithful partner. Some customs for them differ, so follow your family’s tradition.

Q. Is the Karwa Chauth fast compulsory?

No. It is a personal and family choice. Women who are pregnant, nursing or unwell may keep a lighter fast, and that is perfectly acceptable.

Q. What if the Moon is not visible because of clouds?

Many families wait until the panchang moonrise time, then offer arghya facing the eastern direction where the Moon would be. Follow your family tradition or consult an elder or priest.

Q. Why do women look through a sieve?

According to traditional belief, looking directly at the Moon on Chaturthi is considered inauspicious, and the sieve filters out negativity so that only blessings pass through. The sieve is then used to see the husband’s face.
