Ganesh Sthapana Puja Vidhi: Step by Step Guide

One Day Before: Preparation (September 13, 2026)

1. Clean the home thoroughly, especially the space chosen for the idol.
2. Buy or prepare an eco friendly clay idol that will dissolve naturally during visarjan.
3. Prepare and cover the puja platform with turmeric, kumkum and a red or yellow silk cloth.
4. Gather all samagri and arrange it near the puja space.
5. Prepare 21 steamed modaks (ukadiche modak) the evening before, or any sweet associated with Ganesha.
6. Take a sankalpa in the evening, stating your intention for the chosen duration of the festival.

Sthapana Day: Morning of September 14, 2026

Step 1: Purification. Bathe before sunrise and wear clean red or yellow clothing, since red is closely associated with Ganesha's energy.

Step 2: Kalash Sthapana. Fill a copper or clay kalash with water, place five mango leaves inside the rim, set a coconut on top, and tie a sacred thread around its neck. Place it to the right of where the idol will sit.

Step 3: Prana Pratishtha (Invoking the Idol). This is the most important step and should ideally happen during the Madhyahna Muhurat, 11:02 AM to 1:31 PM. Place the idol on the platform, sprinkle Gangajal over it, and touch it three times with durva grass dipped in Gangajal while chanting "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, Avahayami, Sthapayami, Puja Karomi." Step 4: Shodashopachara, the Sixteen Sacred Offerings. In sequence: water for the feet (Padya), water for the hands (Arghya), water for sipping (Achamana), a milk and honey mixture (Madhuparka), a full bath with panchamrit (Snan), a cloth offering (Vastra), a sacred thread (Yajnopavita), sandalwood paste (Gandha), flowers and durva (Pushpa), incense waved clockwise (Dhupa), a lit lamp waved clockwise at least three times (Deepa), modak and fruit (Naivedya), betel leaf and nut (Tambul), a coin (Dakshina), three clockwise circuits around the idol (Pradakshina), and a full prostration (Namaskara).

Step 5: Mantra Japa. Chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" a minimum of 108 times. Follow with the Ganesha Gayatri, "Om Ekadantaya Vidmahe, Vakratundaya Dheemahi, Tanno Dantih Prachodayaat," 21 times. Business owners may additionally chant "Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Glaum Gam Ganapataye Vara Varada Sarva Janam Me Vashamanaya Swaha" 108 times for prosperity.

Step 6: Stotra and Aarti. Recite the Ganapati Atharvashirsha where possible, followed by the Shri Ganesh Aarti, "Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva," with a camphor flame moved clockwise before the idol.
